Academically backward/ slow learners

·        Schonell:- “Backward pupil is one who, compared with other pupil of the same chronological age shows marked educational deficiency”.

·        The backward or slow learners show comparatively poor performance in academic learning and they cannot cope with the work normally expected of their age.

Characteristics

ü  Limited cognitive capacity (70-90).

ü  Poor memory, lack of concentration

ü  Limited power of self-direction

ü  Learn slow and finds it difficult to keep pace with the normal schoolwork

ü  Is unable to deal successfully with abstract concepts

ü  Necessarily failure in the academic field.

ü  Very short span of attention, Less interest and self-motivation

Causes of backwardness

·        Physical factors (Poor health, diseases, defective vision, speech, left handedness)

·        Intellectual factors (low IQ)

·        Family factors (Poverty, Illiteracy, Poor,)

·        School factors (in effective teaching, lack of equipment, Defective curriculum etc.)

·        Social factors (gang)

Problems

·        Problem to understand regular classroom task

·        Lack of motivation

·        Failure attitude

·        Lack of ability and confidence
