Concept of Intelligence Quotient (IQ)



§  Binet was the father of Intelligence test –German psychologist
§  Wilhelm stern, was the first man to formulate the concept of IQ in 1912.
§  Today IQ is the generally accepted means of expressing intelligence
§  IQ represents the ratio of mental age to chronological age or the rate of mental development compared to age
§  It varies from child to child in the same age group
§  Example: a child of 8 whose M.A is 10has an IQ of 125.
§  IQ =MA/CA*100
§  M.A = Mental Age
§  C.A = Chronological Age
§  Individual have been classified into different categories according to the IQ possessed by them
IQ distribution

0-20                Idiots 
20-50              Imbeciles       Retatded (1%           
50-70              Morons         
70-80              Border Line (5%)    
80-90              Backward (14%)     
90-110           Average (60%)        
110-120         Superior (14%)        
120-140         Very superior (5%) 
140 >              Genius (1%) 

Types of IQ test
Classification based on method of testing
§
  Individual test –Only one individual at the same time
Ex: Stanford –Binet Test, Wechsler Adult Intelligence scale, Bhatia Battery of Performance
§  
Group test – a group of Individual is tested at the same time
Ex: A nonverbal group test of intelligence for secondary school by sukumaran Nair
Classification based on Medium of testing
§  
Verbal Test- they make use of language
Ex: Stanford- Binet Test, Army Alpha test – lews Termin
§
  Non- verbal Test – they make use of some activity or performance
Ex: The ravan’s Progressive Matrices – John .C. Ravan-1936


Verbal Test
§  A test which requires the use of verbal ability- Ability to read, write and understand words- of the subject is called Verbal test.
§  It requires language ability
Merits
§  Administration and scoring easy
§  less time consuming
§  Less expensive
§  Prepared easily
Demerits
§  Proficiency of language may influence test scores
§  Need Language ability
§  Not suitable for young children.

Non- Verbal Test
§  These test involve activities and not need language ability
§  Items of nonverbal tests are in the form of symbols, diagrams, perceptual designs or even concrete objects.

Performance Test
§  A performance test is one which the subject has to perform certain standardized tasks or manipulate some concrete materials without use of language.
Merit
§  Most useful for deaf, dumb, illiterate
§  Not need Language ability
Demerit
§  Costly
§  Standardization of performance test is difficult
§  Time consuming
