Dyslexia
·        Term dyslexia coined by Rudolf berlin- 1887
·        Germen word ‘dys’ (difficult) and the Greek word ‘lexis’ (word or speech) –difficulty with words.
·        Language based Learning disability
·        Impairment in the ability to read and spell
·        Difficulties with accurate and fluent word recognition and has poor spelling and decoding abilities

Characteristics

1.      Oral language
            Difficulty in:
§  learning alphabets,
§  pronouncing words,
§  acquiring vocabulary,
§  using appropriate grammar,
§  following verbal direction,
§  understanding concepts and relationships 

2.      Reading
Difficulty in:
§  Learning to read
§  Learning to sound of letters
§  Distinguishing different sounds
§  Poor reading comprehension
§  Slow oral reading

3.      Written language
Difficulty in:
§  Putting ideas on paper
§  Spelling
§  Mirror writing

Role of the teacher (dyslexia)
Ø  Help children to discover their own learning style
Ø  Adopt Systematic, explicit, multi-sensory approach
Ø  Utilize demonstration, observation and experimentation
Ø  Use mind maps
Ø  Give extra time for their work
Ø  Encourage peer help

Ø  Use multiple choice questions
